Kalighat painting has its roots in the cultural changes of 19th century Bengal. This art form originates from Kalighat in Kolkatta. Kalighat painting owes its base origin to the painting styles of the village folk who settled around the Kalighat temple in rural Bengal. Many of these folks were potters and scroll painters, and used watercolors and painted on inexpensive mill papers. For painting, they used brushes made from the hair of squirrels and calf. Transport tones had cheap color pigments, totally different from the traditional Indian style. The paintings gave a plaque-like effect on a neutral background with shaded outlines and nicely expressed gestures and movements. The drawings are simple in technique, but bold and attractive owing to the quality of the brushwork and the flawlessness of the strokes.
